Best Hiking Trails In Bwindi National Park

Best Hiking Trails Bwindi National Park is situated in the districts of Kabale, Kanungu, and Kisoro in the southwest of the country. Bwindi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 331 square kilometers of the tropical rainforest that make up the national park are home to a variety of animal species. When gorilla trekking was introduced in the park in 1993, it gained notoriety. Visitors who love to explore the park on foot and those who are searching for birds utilize the hiking routes that are located throughout the park. Travelers on the Bwindi gorilla safari set aside some time to explore the park’s deep woods in order to view creatures besides mountain gorillas.

Bwindi offers another interesting activity—hiking / nature walks where tourists can get to explore several attractions in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The hiking is from the north of Bwindi to the south. The hiking time ranges from 5 to 9 hours or less. Tourists can choose to add hiking to their package when they visit Bwindi for gorilla trekking tours. Kashasha River Trail

The Kashasha River trail is a 4-5 hour hike and ushers tourists into the jungle of the ancient forest, and the end of the trail is 600 meters high. This interesting trail involves walking through steeper inclines and using the Buhoma–Nkuringo route. The trail begins at Nkuringo Park headquarters and then goes down through community land until reaching the park buffer zone. The trail passes the junction of the two rivers inside the forest, and thereafter, another 20 minutes of ascent meet with the alternative route. The trail is inside the forest and about a 90-minute walk from Buhoma, and several bird species, plants/flowers, and trees, especially the ferns, are spotted. The Kashasha River Trail is one of the most interesting trails because it offers an intimate experience of the natural wonders within this misty rainforest environment, and the birds are plentiful while using this route.

Mubwindi swamp trail

This 4-5 hour trail goes along a path in the jungles and slopes/descends through the magical rainforest with breathtaking viewpoints along the way of rich valleys and the Virunga massif. While on the Mubwindi swamp trail, tourists encounter some primates like monkeys and chimpanzees and numerous bird species, forest elephants, some mountain gorillas, and bush pigs because the majority of the wildlife are found within this area of the forest. Unlike other trails, this trail needs to seek authorization from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. This trail favors bird watchers mostly, hence giving them a perfect adventure.

Bamboo Trail

Hiking through the bamboo trail takes about 7 hours and involves climbing a steep area up to the highest point on Rwamunyonyi Hill at 2607 meters above sea level. Through this trail, tourists encounter plant species that include bamboo forests with over 14 different plant species until they reach the Afro-montane vegetation zone. The viewpoint of this trail rewards hikers with the spectacular view of Lake Bunyonyi and the breathtaking views of the Virunga Volcanoes and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. This trail is conducted in the Ruhija sector or area so that tourists connect easily and faster to the activity.

Muzabajiro Loop Trail

This trail takes 3 – 4 hours, which involves walking through the forest and climbing to Rukubira Hill, where tourists enjoy the fantastic view of the Virunga Mountains, Buhoma areas of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and the western rift valley below.

Ivy River Trail

The Ivy River Trail on a Uganda safari is a 14 km/full day’s walk with the most fascinating experiences and is conducted through an old road in the jungle. On this trail, tourists encounter several mammal species, including bush pigs, primates, birds, and butterfly species, and also some of the local community members. The trail can start from either Buhoma or Nkuringo. It is a 2-3 hour walk from Nkuringo Park headquarters to the Ivy River, while from this river to Buhoma, as tourists walk through the forest, takes 4 hours, hence making a total of 6 hours. Tourists ascend and descend gently through the interesting areas of the jungle with numerous viewpoints from the murram road.

The Habinyanja (Railegh) Trail

The trail takes 4-6 hours. After passing through the Munyanga River, tourists use a fairly steep slope of the Habigorogoro and Riyoyi overlooking the Buhoma River. The interesting feature on this is the ‘African corner,’ named after a rock that represents the map of Africa. Bird watchers also find this hike interesting because they encounter the African Black Duck, Black Bee-eaters, and Pel’s Fishing Owl.

Rushura Hill trail

This trail passes through a forest shared by two countries. Rushura Hill is the highest point in the Buhoma sector. And the trails begin near Buhoma Park Headquarters through the terraced gardens and breathtaking forests. When tourists get to the top of the hill, they are amazed by the mind-blowing views of the Western Rift Valley, Rwenzori Mountains, Lake Edward, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and the Virunga volcanoes.

Munyaga Waterfall Trail

This trail starts from Buhoma along the River Ivy-Nkuringo trail and culminates in the breathtaking views of the three crystal-clear waterfalls that are 33 meters high. Other features that can be seen on this trail include monkeys, tree species like the orchids, ferns, birds, and colorful and beautiful butterfly species.

The Ruizi River Trail

This trail is the longest trail in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and it usually takes a whole day and is best for bird watchers.

 The Buhoma–Nkuringo Trail

This trail takes 3-4 hours, which crosses through the park, then connects the two villages and offers a spectacular view of the smoggy hillside as hikers descend the hills towards Nkuringo. This trail does not require hikers to move with luggage since it can be found on the other end of the trail.
