Distance between sectors in Bwindi Park: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is situated in the southwestern part of Uganda, bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo, next to the Virunga Volcanoes. It hosts half of the world’s endangered species with a rich biodiversity that comprises 120 mammals, 350 bird species, 200 butterfly species, and over 1,000 flowering plants. It spans an area of 321 square kilometers with thick montane and tropical lowland vegetation. The unique sectors in Bwindi include the Buhoma sector, Ruhija, the Nkuringo sector, and the Rushaga sector. Distance matters when traveling to Bwindi National Park while on a Uganda safari because transportation costs and travel time increase; however, they provide the attraction’s landscapes and cultural sites, reduce stress, and boost physical creativity.

Overview of Bwindi’s four main sectors

Buhoma sector

located in the northern part of Bwindi National Park. It is a home to the first habituated gorilla family in Bwindi, called the Mubare family. It is considered the best sector for first-time travelers due to the less challenging terrain. It has a wide range of accommodation facilities, from luxury, mid-range, and budget-friendly lodges. It can be accessed via the Kampala/Entebbe route through the Masaka-Mbarara-Kabale district and by air; domestic flights are booked through Uganda Aero Link from Entebbe/Kajjansi to the Kihihi airstrip. It offers activities like gorilla trekking, cultural tours, Batwa visits, and nature walks to tourists.

Ruhija sector

Nestled in the eastern part of Bwindi National Park. This sector is mostly known as the paradise for birders. It is located in the high elevation of the park, about 2,000 m above sea level. It has a variety of accommodation facilities that run from mid-range to budget and luxury lodges, providing high-quality services to tourists. It is the closest sector to Lake Bunyonyi, and it can easily be accessed through Queen Elizabeth National Park via the Ishasha sector, known for climbing lions, or from Kampala via the Masaka-Mbarara route. By air, domestic flights are booked, and trips start from either the Entebbe or Kajjansi airstrip to the Kihihi airfield.

Rushaga sector

Located in the southern part of Bwindi National Park in the Kisoro district. It is the most known sector for carrying out habituation experiences in Bwindi. It is a home to over 10 gorilla families, offering over 64 gorilla permits. The gorilla habituation experience allows tourists to spend four hours with the mountain gorillas to observe their behaviors and habits. This sector can be accessed by road from Kampala/Entebbe via the Masaka-Mbarara route and also from Kigali Airport, Rwanda, via the Cyanika and Gatuna borders. By air, flights are booked from Uganda Aero Link from either Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to Kisoro Airstrip.

Nkuringo sector

It is situated in the southern part of Bwindi National Park, habitating over 400 mountain gorillas. This sector has four gorilla families that are trekked to each year. This sector is known for having the first gorilla family to have twins and the famous silverback known as Rafiki, which later passed on. The Nkuringo sector offers physically challenging treks due to the steep, rugged terrain and the high elevation of about 2,500 m above sea level. Various activities can be carried out in this sector, including birding, community tours, nature walks, and scenic views of the Virunga Volcanoes.

Distance between Bwindi sectors

Distance from Buhoma to Ruhija sector

The Buhoma sector is located in the northern part of Bwindi, and the Ruhija sector is located in the eastern part of Bwindi. Each sector is comprised of different gorilla families that are trekked to yearly.

The distance from Buhoma to the Ruhija sector is not far because tourists that trek in Buhoma can visit Ruhija, and those that trek in Ruhija can visit the Buhoma sector. The gorilla trekking safaris begin in the morning with a briefing. Some tourists trek mountain gorillas in the Buhoma sector and stay in the Ruhija sector because their best accommodation facilities are closest to the Ruhija sector. The distance between these sectors is about 1 to 2 hours depending on the nature of the roads. Tourists can use a 4×4 vehicle to travel from Buhoma to Ruhija because in most cases the roads are slippery and muddy.

Buhoma to Rushaga

The Buhoma sector is located in the northern part of Bwindi, and the Rushaga sector is located in the southern part of Bwindi National Park. The distance from Buhoma to Rushaga is about 120–150 km, which takes about 4 to 6 hours to drive through the steep, rugged, muddy, and slippery terrain depending on the climate conditions. Tourists usually use the 4×4 vehicle that manages the rough terrain.

Buhoma – Nkuringo sector

The travel distance from the Buhoma sector in the north to the Nkuringo sector in the south of Bwindi National Park is about 14 km. The Buhoma-Nkuringo trail is one of the known nature trails in Bwindi National Park. The travel distance between these sectors takes about 5 to 7 hours to complete the journey.

Ruhija – Rushaga sector

The Ruhija sector is located in the eastern part, and the Rushaga sector is located in the southern part of Bwindi. The journey between these sectors takes about 4 to 5 hours, about 120 km to 190 km depending on the terrain of the road. The route passes through the Kabale district to the southern sector.

Ruhija-Nkuringo sector

The Ruhija sector in the east and the Nkuringo sector in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The travelling distance between these sectors takes about 2 to 3 hours depending on the road’s conditions. During the rainy season, the road is slippery and muddy, making it difficult to access the southern sector from Ruhija. It’s a 30 km to 40 km distance.

Rushaga – Nkuringo

Both the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors are located in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The distance between these sectors is about 16 to 18 km apart, around 45 minutes to 60 minutes.

Choosing the right sector based on distance.

If tourists are having combined tours in Queen Elizabeth National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the best sectors to choose from are the Buhoma sector in the north of Bwindi and the Ruhija sector in the east of Bwindi.

For travelers that access Bwindi Impenetrable National Park from Rwanda via the Cyanika and Gatuna borders, the best sectors are the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in remote areas, making it difficult to access the park, especially in the rainy season. When planning for your gorilla safari, you should choose the right sector to match your adventurous experience.
